A new advanced offering from LAB MPLS!

This advanced level class is designed to will use the classic techniques of hand-sewing with leather. Students are able to choose from projects that demonstrate the basics of working with leather including cutting, punching, hand sewing, riveting, snap setting, finishing and care. Students will be guided through the process from hide to finished product – leaving the class with their very own handmade laptop sleeve, or tote bag. Depending on what you are making, you might need the entire 4 hours, but some might finish earlier. 

You will be able to choose your leather project by selecting the ticket option on eventbrite. When you arrive there will be a variety of colors you can choose from (black, different shades of brown, tan and even a few bright colors).

We recommend that students have taken a previous Leather LAB, Leather LAB 1.0 or one of Merchant Leather's classes before registering for this class. We believe that you will be happier with the end result if you've had previous experience.

This advanced leather-working class will build on your sewing skills, allowing students to create a larger, more complex project. Focus will be on refining your hand-sewing technique for speed and accuracy as well as problem solving during the construction process

Marine Mills - Leatherworking 2.0- Tote Bag

This advanced leather-working class will build on previously learned sewing skills, allowing students to create a larger, more complex project. Students who have previously taken Beginning Leatherworking will enjoy advancing their craft while completing a larger project.

We will focus on refining your hand-sewing technique for speed and accuracy as well as problem-solving during the construction process.  Students will work from a custom tote bag pattern while being guided through the basics of leather design and construction – including the skills necessary to design their own goods.

You will be contacted about a week before the class to choose your leather (there will be multiple options available on a first come, first served basis, but colors and leather options not guaranteed). The tote bag is approximately 15” tall x 12” wide x 3” deep with a pocket that can be sewn on the inside or outside of the bag. Previous hand-sewing (saddle stitch) experience is strongly recommended. While the basics will be covered, the more experience you have, the happier you will be with your finished project.

Clutch Purse Making allows you to create a truly unique leather clutch that is sure to make you the talk of the town. You will learn how to use classic techniques to construct a useful and beautiful hand-crafted masterpiece. Learn the basics of working with leather including selecting hides from several materials and colors, pattern making, hardware selection, cutting, punching and piercing leather, and saddle stitching – as well as finishing and care.  Choosing from several different colors of leather, as well as styles of clasps.

Leather Belt Making

Belt Making invites you to create a one-of-a-kind keepsake belt that will take your style to the next level. Learn the basics of working with leather including selecting hides from several materials and colors, pattern making, hardware selection, cutting, punching and piercing leather, and saddle stitching – as well as finishing and care. Choosing from several different widths and colors of leather, as well as styles of buckle, will allow you to fashion a belt that will be uniquely you.

For these classes, we will learn how to fold, sew, and punch the leather to fashion each design. Learning from the pros at Merchant Leather, you are sure to leave with not only a new self-crafted product, but new skills, knowledge, and appreciation that you can put to use in the future!

Built to last, these Clutches and Belts are “classically styled and crafted by hand – and designed for everyday use for generations to come”. Minneapolis and St. Paul are home to world-class museums, a plethora of theaters, countless local artisans, and two full cities’ worth of breathtaking architecture. To say that the Twin Cities are a mecca for art lovers would be an understatement. One art form that is constantly gaining popularity across our state is the creation of craft beer with its multilayered flavors and rich colors.

Inspired by the art of beer and local artisans, we’ve created a brand-new installment in our Arts & Ales Event Series: Leather Working. For this event, we are proud to join forces with Indeed Brewing Company and Blue Door Pub – who will begin each evening by serving up a pint of beer and a locally-crafted meal in Indeed’s private event space – “The Ox”. After enjoying the artful beer and food, we are sure to be inspired for our next “craft” – Leather Working.

The time-honored tradition of manipulating and sewing leather into usable forms creates not only beautiful keepsakes, but functional statement pieces that can be used for generations. We are proud to partner up with custom leather worker, Merchant Leather, to bring you a leather working Arts & Ales where you’ll be able to choose from one of four brand new take-home leather projects that you can choose from to create and enjoy for years to come. Hand Sewing 101 - Small Goods

Everything you need to be able to hand sew leather and amazing craft cocktails to celebrate!

This entry level class is designed to introduce the classic techniques of hand-sewing with leather. Students are able to choose from projects that demonstrate the basics of working with leather including cutting, punching, hand sewing, riveting, snap setting, finishing and care.

Students will be guided through the process from hide to finished product – leaving the class with their very own handmade Coin Wallet, Card Wallet, Sunglass Case or Valet Tray.

Multiple options will be available for each project the night of - no need to choose in advance.
